In this blogpost, published by the EUI Global Citizenship Observatory on 2/8/22, I discuss New York City’s recently enacted law to restore local voting rights for noncitizens. I contextualize this city law by situating it in the history of noncitizen voting in the United States and by comparing it to other recently adopted initiatives that advance urban citizenship in New York City.

On 12/6/21, BIMI Blog published an op-ed piece I co-authored with Shannon Gleeson (Cornell University) and Nicole Kreisberg (Harvard University), titled "Are Refugee Resettlement Services Doing More Harm Than Good?" While news coverage has focused on the challenges for safe evacuation to the U.S. following the Taliban takeover, mostly overlooked are the challenges still ahead for Afghan evacuees as they navigate an underfunded and disjointed support system focused on short-term resettlement targets.

On 3/24/21, SUM published a short piece on my co-authored article (with Shannon Gleeson, Cornell University), titled "Labor Unions and Undocumented Immigrants: Local Perspectives on Transversal Solidarity During DACA and DAPA." The article, published in Critical Sociology, analyzes local union strategies to build solidarity with undocumented immigrants in Houston and San Francisco.

On 9/24/20, SUM published a short piece on my article, titled "City Government Activists and the Rights of Undocumented Immigrants: Fostering Urban Citizenship within the Confines of US Federalism." The article, published in Antipode, analyzes how — within the confines of US federalism — activist city officials have developed policies and practices that include undocumented immigrants in public service provision, formal rights protections, and democratic participation modes.

On 9/23/20, I participated in a conference — organized by the French Institute of International Relations (IFRI) — on "Anti-Immigrant Politics and Nativism in Europe and in the United States: What Can Actors in the Field Do?" Due to COVID-19, I couldn't participate in the conference in person, so I was interviewed ahead of time with two other experts. The conference organizers compiled three short videos of our contributions: part 1, part 2, and part 3.

The article, published in the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, analyzes how local context shapes immigrant-labor partnership strategies in 3 US cities.

On 5/27/20, SUM published a short piece on my co-authored article (with Shannon Gleeson, Cornell University), titled "Metropolitan Context and Immigrant Rights Experiences: DACA Awareness and Support in Houston." The article, published in Urban Geography, analyzes how the context of metropolitan Houston shaped how young undocumented immigrants thought about DACA and went about applying for this federal program.
